Cross-country skiing and of course biathlon are the sports for which Obertilliach is known word-wide. The diversified ski run routing and the beauty of the landscape of the 60 km long Grenzlandloipe between Hollbruck near Kartitsch and Maria Luggau inspire everyone, from amateurs to world and Olympic champions.
With the realization of the Biathlon Junior World Championship in January 2013 Obertilliach did definitely make its mark in the international winter sport scene. The annual “Classicrace” of Austria’s biggest popular cross-country ski race, the Dolomitenlauf, the biathlon world cup in December 1989, regular biathlon European Cup competitions in the past years and Austrian biathlon and cross-country championships have confirmed the “nordic competence” of this small village. So what else can we say? The Norwegian biathlon champion Ole Einar Björndalen – one of the best winter sportsmen ever and exceptional talent – is resident of Obertilliach since 2004, there’s nothing more to say.
